This bustling city, the ninth largest in New
York, is located 18 mi (29 km) northwest of Albany
and has a bounty of natural and cultural attractions to explore. The name is derived
from a Mohawk word which means, “near the pines”. Schenectady was also
once known as the “city that lights and hauls the world”, a reference
to the General Electric Company and the American Locomotive Company, which both
had head offices in the city. The Erie
Canal runs through town, and is rich in history as one of the first commercial
waterways in the United States. The
Schenectady Historical Society has also created a unique museum,
documenting the rich past of this community, with a variety of interactive and
informative displays.The
Stockade is steeped in history, with pre-revolution architecture. In addition,
the Planetarium
offers a glimpse into outer space through a series of dazzling films and dioramas.
